China’s chilly north starts 2019 with ice fishing

Fishermen in northeast China’s Jilin province started the new year with a net full of fish harvested from the frozen Chagan Lake, one of the country’s largest freshwater lakes. Braving the freezing cold, teams of fishermen leave their village in Songyuan before sunrise to prepare for the traditional ice fishing, putting huge fishing nets through holes drilled into the frozen lake. About 650,000kg of fish, nearly half of the expected total haul, have been caught in the region since the start of fishing season.
