China starts summer-long annual fishing ban in coastal waters

China has imposed a summer fishing ban from May 1, 2019, covering the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea above the 12th parallel north. The ban aims to improve marine ecology and maintain sustainable fishing.

Domestic and foreign fishing boats will be monitored 24-7 by China’s coastguard which will be on the lookout for any violations.

Despite the economic impact of the months-long restriction, some fishermen voiced support for the ban’s aim of helping their industry and said tourism can help maintain their livelihoods during the no-fishing period.

The annual fishing moratorium in the designated area of the South China Sea will last until August 16. Fishing activity will be allowed to resume on September 1 in the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, and on September 16 in the East China Sea.
