Just ahead of US President Trump’s deadline for a deal to head off a ban of video-sharing app TikTok on national security grounds, American computer technology corporation Oracle has reached a deal to become the Chinese company’s “trusted technology partner”. The agreement was confirmed by Oracle on September 14, 2020, and follows the rejection by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, of an earlier proposal from Microsoft. In July, the Trump administration demanded that TikTok find an American owner in less than three months, saying the move was to ensure that China’s government could not access user data.
