China has called on Papua New Guinea to “penalise perpetrators severely”, after local riots resulted in the looting of Chinese-owned properties and injuries among Chinese nationals. The Pacific nation of 10 million people has been rocked by two nights of violence since January 10, 2024, as public servants, including police officers, walked off the job to protest against a controversial pay cut. The president declared a 14-day state of emergency on January 11.
