Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh face backlash as resentment among locals grows

Rohingya refugees face increasing backlash in Bangladesh, where many live in exile after fleeing persecution in Myanmar in 2017. Since then, public opinion has turned against the stateless Muslim people from Rakhine state in Myanmar’s northwest. During a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 23, 2022, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her country risked sociopolitical instability because of the prolonged presence of Rohingya refugees.
