Japanese scientists make strides toward perfecting humanlike robots with lab-grown human skin

Japanese scientists have successfully grafted a lab-grown layer of human skin cells onto a robotic finger. The project was detailed in an article published in the journal Matter on June 9, 2022. To graft the skin, the team from the University of Tokyo submerged the robotic finger in a mixture of collagen and human dermal fibroblast solution, two main components of human skin connective tissue. Scientists then added a layer of cells found in the outermost skin covering. The crafted skin is water-repellent and can even self-heal with the help of a collagen bandage.
