Myanmar’s army declares state of emergency after leader Aung San Suu Kyi detained during raid

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior figures from the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party have been detained in an apparent coup, the spokesman for the governing NLD said on February 1, 2021. The raids came after the country’s military called for an investigation into alleged voter fraud during last year’s election, which was swept by Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy. Hours after the detentions, Myanmar’s army declared a state of emergency, saying that power had been handed to the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. A military television report said the army would remain in charge of the country for one year.
