Last week, we asked our readers, “What do you wish you could’ve done during this early summer holiday, but did not?” Here’s what they had to say.
What is one dream that you woke up from wishing it was real?
Bake a cake. I really love eating desserts and sugary snacks, so I have always wanted to try baking a cake.
I found a simple recipe for a blueberry cheesecake online and planned to make it this holiday. But my mum is really busy at work, and she wants me to take care of my newborn brother and four-year-old sister. So I now spend my time playing with toy kitchen sets with my siblings.

I was very much looking forward to a “barbecue night” with my whole family and some of my relatives this holiday. It is a good way to relax and can also enhance your mood and mental well-being. But one of my family members came down with Covid-19, so the plan was cancelled.
I hope the pandemic will end soon so that I can enjoy a safe get-together with my family members once again.

I wish I could have gone to Hong Kong Disneyland this holiday, but it is closed. I wish I could have joined a DIY workshop, but it is suspended. I wish I could have met my friends for dinner, but restaurants are closed. I wish I wouldn’t need to wear masks any more, but I have to. What a dull holiday!

I hoped to train my dog to pee in the correct place during the summer holiday. I watched many videos about it. I thought it would be a piece of cake, but I was wrong!
The dog kept peeing all over the flat and looked at me with great satisfaction.
On top that, I had brought some treats to reward the dog whenever it pees in the right spot.
But, in the end, I had to throw them all away anyway because they had passed the expiration date.

The funniest things we have heard recently
It would be cool if I spent some time learning how to do music arrangements and mixing. I’m a complete novice in this area, so I’m not sure if I really have the ability to acquire those skills.
Yet I know that focusing on practice papers is surely more realistic at this moment. My plans aren’t really affected by the pandemic though. It’s just that the DSE exams are hanging over my head, and I feel that if I don’t study hard, I am wasting my time.
Following the public exam, I’ll perhaps come up with an endless list of summer holiday wishes.
Janis Poon Ming-yan, 16, Ying Wa Girls’ School
Seeing all the book recommendations online, I was eager to read some of them in the early days of the summer holiday. But it wasn’t to be because I started watching YouTube videos 24/7.
I guess I need to develop my reading habit. Next time, I will look for a quiet place to curl up with a fun, compelling book.
Amanda Ho Hui-yin, 15, St Mary‘s Canossian College
I planned to go to my friend’s home for a sleepover. We were hoping to get together and do some revision. But my friend caught Omicron, and I was worried about her. But she is OK now.
I feel sad that I can’t go out and meet my friends. We can call each other, but we don’t really have much to chat about.
I hope this pandemic will end soon, so that I can see my friends in person.
Maureen Sung Weng-chuen, 13, Lai King Catholic Secondary School
I wished I could meet my friends during the early summer holiday, but it is dangerous to do so during the fifth wave of the pandemic.
As everyone knows, this is not a “real summer holiday”, especially for senior form students. A normal summer holiday from July until the end of August usually gives students a chance to engage in different programmes and workshops.
But I didn’t take part in any activities because I had to deal with a mountain of homework, extra lessons, assignments, and revision.
There was no time to enjoy the holiday.

What is the weirdest habit you have developed during the pandemic?
I wanted to go to a study room to catch up with my schoolwork, but my parents rejected my request because of the current Covid-19 situation.
There are too many things at home which distract me from my studies. I lack self-discipline, so a quiet environment is essential for me.
I feel a little depressed after being stuck at home for so long.
Amy Cheng Wai-ching, 12, CCC Heep Woh College
I wish I could have travelled abroad during the early summer holiday. Such trips help us to gain a better understanding of different cultures. But it’s not possible now.
I could have visited my relatives living in foreign countries. Before the pandemic, my family and I went to many places, including Japan, Thailand, Australia and Taiwan. We had a lot of fun during these trips. In addition, we learned many new things, such as skiing, snorkelling and surfing.
I hope we all can travel soon.
