Last week, we asked our readers, “What is the most surprising or unique name you have ever heard?” Here’s what they had to say.
“Sparkle”, merely like a star sparkling in any plights, is the most unique name I have met. This name implies the hope of her parent, hoping the daughter to stay optimistic while facing the setbacks in her life. However, the underlying reason of this name is more unanticipatedly romantic - you are the star that brighten our life.

“Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116”. This is a name intended for a Swedish child who was born in 1991. The parents gave their baby this name to protest a fine, imposed in accordance with the naming law in Sweden. When I saw this message online, I was really surprised how can the child and parents remember the name. Also, quite funny to know someone who gives a strange name to their children to protest.

“Good morning everyone! My name is Submarine,” said a new classmate.
Submarine? Who wants to call themselves a weapon? Will he attack us? I talked loudly with my friends. He overheard that and told me the meaning of his name. He wanted to be his true self at all times no matter what the situation is. Just like the submarine in the deep sea withstanding the high pressure.

Augenstern. This is my username on the Internet. This word consists of two German words. Augen in German means “eye”s and “stern” means stars. When combining the two words, it means “the star of a mother’s eyes”. I hope I can be an ideal daughter in my mother’s eyes.

The most unique name that I have ever heard of is Tesla chief executive Elon Musk’s youngest son who is called X Æ A-12. The X represent the unknown variable, Æ resembles the Chinese words of love or AI, and A-12 is the couple’s favourite aircraft. What a unique name it is!

Sodium. As everybody knows sodium is a chemical element, it is really hard to connect sodium to a name. I first heard it on my school’s open day. A teacher was calling a senior Sodium. I was surprised that it can be a person’s name. Sodium burns with acid, and reacts with water to give out gas bubbles. Hope his life can be like sodium, feeling and reacting to different things when he is facing different situations. I am thinking of changing my name to Calcium.

When I was in Primary Four, a newcomer to my class is called Liger. He is very affable and outgoing, nearly everyone became his friend. He explained to me that his mom’s star sign is Leo, and his dad’s was born in the Year of the Tiger. That is how he was given such a portmanteau name. I guess his parents want him to be as energetic and strong as a lion and a tiger.

A female friend of mine has the name Antoinette. When I first met her in preschool, I’ve always had trouble pronouncing her name and ended up being made fun of by her. Apparently, Antoinette is known as the female version of Anthony, which was her brother’s name, and that it was from the Latin antonius that meant “priceless” and also meant “flower” in the Greek antonius.

Asantewaa. It is a girl’s name that means “Warrior”. It reminds the girls to not be afraid as they can also be as brave as warriors. Warrior is not just for boys. Girls can be, too.

The most unique name that I have ever heard of is Mac. He is one of my best friends. Since Big Mac is a food item in local McDonalds and he happens to be tall and big, sometimes people call him Big Mac. He’s cool with it even when we make fun of his name sometime.
