Ad urging support for amendments to Hong Kong extradition law runs on covers of five local newspapers
Adverts were paid for by Safeguard HK, Support the Surrender of Fugitive Offenders Legislation, an alliance which supports the proposed changes
While hundreds of thousands of HongKongers demonstrated against the controversial extradition bill on Sunday, the poster covers of five local newspapers - Sing Tao Daily, Wen Wei Po, Ming Pao, Ta Kung Pao, and Oriental Daily News - read “Support the Amendment of [Extradition] Law. No More Heaven for Fugitive Offenders.”
The covers were an advertisement for Safeguard HK, Support the Surrender of Fugitive Offenders Legislation, an alliance which supports the amendment of the proposed extradition law. The same advert could be seen again on the covers of Sing Tao Daily and Oriental Daily News and the back page of the Hong Kong Economic Journal on Monday.
During Sunday’s march, the advertisement was shown on the electronic billboard of Ta Kung Pao’s office in Wan Chai, which was greeted with continuous boos and hisses by the protesters walking past.
The alliance had also gathered more than 800,000 Hongkongers to sign a petition online in support of the proposed extradition bill, according to the Monday cover stories of both the Wen Wei Po and Hong Kong Commercial Daily.
Other local publications including Ming Pao, Apple Daily, Sing Tao, and the South China Morning Post ran cover stories about the mass protest on Sunday.
More than 500 local and international petitions have been created to oppose the amendment of the law; among them were 358 representatives from secondary schools in Hong Kong, according to the South China Morning Post.
