Israel officially declared war a day after Gaza’s militant Hamas rulers carried out an unprecedented attack on the country during a major holiday on October 7, 2023. Hamas militants fired thousands of rockets into Israel, and sent dozens of fighters through heavily fortified borders in several locations by air, land and sea. Hundreds of people have been killed on both sides, and dozens of Israeli soldiers and civilians, including children, have been taken hostage in Gaza.
