Vietnam consul general hails ‘new period’ of relations with Hong Kong following visa relaxation

Vietnam’s top envoy in Hong Kong said bilateral relations were entering a “new period” filled with “huge opportunities” in business and people-to-people exchanges. Pham Binh Dam, Vietnamese consul general to Hong Kong, was reacting to a proposal by Hong Kong leader John Lee Ka-chiu to relax visa requirements for Vietnamese nationals coming for work, business and travel to the city. Hong Kong has long had strict entry requirements for Vietnamese people, stemming from the refugee crisis of 1975-1995. In recent years, however, Hong Kong has sought to expand relations with the growing manufacturing hub.
