Hong Kong handover anniversary

Assailant dies after stabbing Hong Kong police officer and then himself on busy street

A lone assailant died after he stabbed a police officer and then himself on a busy Hong Kong street on July 1, 2021, as the city marked the 24th anniversary of its return to Chinese sovereignty.

Police said the uniformed officer was knifed in the back outside the Sogo department store in Causeway Bay at around 10pm by a 50-year-old man who then used the weapon on himself. Sources said he was certified dead at Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai.

The officer was seriously injured in the attack, the department said. He was admitted to the intensive care unit at Queen Mary Hospital needing urgent surgery, according to a source.
