Hong Kong marked the 27th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule with colourful events around the city and discounts offered by thousands of restaurants and retailers. Citizens and tourists alike enjoyed free tram rides as well as free admission to museums including M+ and the Hong Kong Palace Museum on July 1, 2024. At a reception marking the anniversary, city leader John Lee Ka-chiu announced that mainland officials have agreed to send a pair of giant pandas to Hong Kong.
