South Africa lifts coronavirus curfew as Omicron wave peaks without rise in death rate

South Africa lifted its Covid-19 curfew on December 30, 2021, after government health officials reported a rapid drop in new infections. Case involving the Omicron strain of the coronavirus, which has driven the nation’s fourth wave, had risen rapidly for four weeks before numbers dropped by nearly 30 per cent as of Christmas Day. Early data from health officials also showed that despite the spike in new cases, hospitalisations and deaths remained stable.
