China announced on April 11, 2025, that it will raise tariffs on American goods to 125 per cent from its previous rate of 84 per cent. The new rate matched the US level announced by the Trump administration the previous day. Beijing’s announcement was made on the same day Chinese President Xi Jinping told visiting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez that the European Union should help China resist “unilateral bullying” and that China was not afraid of oppression. Sanchez was the first European leader to visit China following the imposition of sweeping tariffs by the US. The visiting leader said that Spain favoured a more balanced relationship between China and the EU, adding that there were currently opportunities to deepen such ties. His comments came as EU leaders were reportedly planning to travel to Beijing for a summit with Xi in late July.
