The Philippines accused Chinese coastguard ships of using water cannons to “obstruct” government supply vessels on December 9, 2023, and condemned the “illegal and aggressive actions”. The Chinese coastguard said it took “control measures” as three Philippine vessels “intruded” into waters near the Scarborough Shoal in the disputed South China Sea. The shoal, called Huangyan Island in Chinese, is occupied by China but also claimed by the Philippines.
