Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr says China’s expanding presence in the South China Sea has made the situation in the disputed area “more dire”. He made the remarks in a speech in Hawaii soon after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Apec summit in San Francisco. Marcos Jnr said China is starting to show interest in atolls and shoals that are “closer and closer” to the coast of the Philippines. China claims virtually the entire South China Sea, and has long-running disputes over parts of it with a number of neighbouring countries and Taiwan.
