Mainland Chinese officials view Pelosi’s trip, which would be the highest-level visit to the self-ruled island by a US official since 1997, as a show of support for Taiwan independence. Washington has countered that there is nothing out of the ordinary about Pelosi’s trip, adding that several US lawmakers have visited Taiwan in the past.
