China issues new banknotes and coins

The People’s Bank of China will distribute new banknotes and coins from August 30, 2019.

The new notes have sharper colours and are better protected against counterfeiting but will have similar designs – former Chinese leader Mao Zedong’s portrait remains the main image.

When tilting the banknotes the colour of the value number will change due to colour-changing ink.

Only the 50, 20, 10 and 1 yuan notes will get an update – the 100 yuan bill remains unchanged.

Coins will see the biggest changes. Smaller one yuan coins are designed to be more portable, while the colour of a five jiao (0.5 yuan) coin changes from gold to silver.

The new banknotes and coins will be circulated in parallel with previous editions with the same face value.
