World experts alarmed by ‘gene-edited babies’

The Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing runs in Hong Kong from November 27 to 29, and sees the world's genetic scientists and bioethics experts discussing how DNA editing should be regulated. Some of them reacted with shock and alarm, when Chinese researcher Dr. He Jiankui claimed on November 26 that he helped make the world’s first genetically edited babies. He is expected to speak at the close of the meeting. The summit is also mulling over a formal statement on gene editing.
