China has begun drilling a hole in the earth that will eventually be over 10,000 metres (33,00ft) deep. The hole is located in the hinterlands of the Taklimakan Desert, China’s largest desert. Hailed as a landmark in the country’s deep-earth exploration, the borehole will allow scientists to hunt for new discoveries inside the Earth, as well as seek oil and gas resources.
