Chinese scientist claims to have created world's first gene-edited babies

A Chinese researcher claims that he has helped make the world's first genetically modified babies, Lulu and Nana. The researcher, He Jiankui, says the twin girls’ DNA was altered with the CRISPR gene-editing tool to switch off an HIV-related gene so they would be born with an immunity to HIV viruses. Chinese health regulators have said they were “in the dark”  about the experiment until it was announced and have launched an investigation. He’s announcement also triggered a flood of condemnation from scientists at home and abroad.
