Claims that 5G mobile signals were harming Sri Lanka’s centuries-old holy tree recently spread so fast on social media that it led to a rapid response from the island’s cash-strapped government. A team of experts including the head of the telecoms regulator, botanists and local administrators was dispatched to conduct surveys and examine the Sri Maha Bodhi tree. What they found was good news for the tree but bad for trust in online information.
