Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on January 20, 2023, a plan to downgrade Covid-19 to a disease category on par with the flu. The move would also ease mask-wearing and isolation rules. But the decision comes as the country faces record levels of Covid-19 related deaths among its elderly, in what is seen as Japan’s eighth wave of the outbreak since the pandemic began three years ago.
