Singapore will repeal an archaic law that criminalises gay sex, but the government will also amend the city state’s constitution to protect existing laws barring marriage equality, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on August 21, 2022. Speaking during his annual policy address, Lee said the moves represented a balance of views among Singaporeans on the issue. Lee said repeal of Section 377A of the penal code, a holdover from the time of British colonial rule, would provide “some relief to gay Singaporeans”, while constitutional change would retain “the basic family structure of marriage between a man and a woman”.
