Ho Hung Kee restaurant review: Michelin-starred Hong Kong comfort food
What’s hot: For meat lovers, the 100% US Angus beef burger with fries (HK$128) is a filling, and fulfilling, choice. Best ordered medium rare, the patty was more tender than most. The fries are plentiful, and the somewhat artistic presentation, with a steak knife stabbed through the bun, added variety to a favourite dish.
The linguine with tiger prawn and mentaiko sauce (HK$118) had a super-rich prawn scent that lingered until the plate was clear. The generously-sized tiger prawn tasted fresh and the mentaiko (pollock roe) sauce was an excellent addition that complemented the overall flavour of the dish.
Similarly, the lobster soup (HK$20 when ordered with a main course) had a very strong aroma. It had a very powerful taste (though pleasantly so), and the cream on top was a nice decoration.
The Angus beef burger is very tasty.
What’s not: Although tender and visually appealing, the slow cooked half spring chicken with baby spinach salad was a bit bland and could do with more seasoning. Additionally, the portion of the chicken was too small.
The service was also mediocre. The staff seemed to be inexperienced as they mixed up my table’s receipt with another table’s.
And while it may not be a big deal in terms of taste, the ice cream for dessert was sloppily swirled.
Cost: Breakfast is HK$55-HK$75. Main dishes are HK$88-HK$188. Other dishes are HK$68-HK$108. Snacks are HK$50-HK$68. Drinks are HK$26 and up. Cake is HK$28 when you order a meal.
