6 thoughts we had when watching Olivia Rodrigo’s new music video ‘Deja Vu’
- The ‘Driver’s License’ star has released a second single
- The teenager also stars in ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ on Disney+
Olivia Rodrigo is giving the fans what they want, and she’s come out with another bop just two months after Driver’s Licence. Her new song, Deja Vu, was released today, and it’s already gained more than 2.5 million views.
Here’s what we thought about the video.
She’s really using that driver’s licence
Honestly, capitalising on the success from Driver’s Licence and continuing her musical journey in another white car is a pretty smart move. She’s definitely gotten an upgrade though, and she looks super chic in that creamy convertible.
The colour palette is gorgeous
The video is soft, dreamy and vibrant all at the same time - it’s very Lana Del Ray actually. She moves from an empty pastel swimming pool to jewel toned rooms to the brighter sharper colours of the beach, almost like it’s representing the intensity of different memories.
Her voice is so crisp
She really doesn’t need music to carry her voice because it’s so powerful on its own. Deja Vu starts with a gentle tinkling tune, and eventually crescendos to complement the intensity of her singing and the subject matter. Super-reminiscent of the storytelling of her idol, and pop “mother”, Taylor Swift.
5 things to know about the Driver’s Licence singer
Is she still singing about Sabrina Carpenter?
She literally sings “Another actress, I hate to think that I was just your type”, so if that’s not telling, we don’t know what is. Also, the other girl in the music video lowkey looks like Ms Carpenter, with her gorgeous, long, blondish-brownish hair and blue eyes. Hmmm Olivia’s not being so subtle anymore, is she ...
The shade
“I bet she’s bragging to all her friends saying you’re so unique”, “She thinks it’s special, but it’s all reused”, and “I made the jokes you tell to her when she’s with you” all prove she is absolutely not holding back anymore. This level of confidence compared to the melancholy lyrics from her last hit show her growth, but also that she’s not afraid to speak her mind.
Olivia was sad, but now she’s mad
Smashing up the TVs must feel incredibly cathartic, especially since her “replacement” in the video is taunting her. But is this rage she expresses aimed towards Carpenter and Bassett’s new relationship in real life, or are the TVs symbolic of the media’s involvement in that “love triangle” and she’s sick of seeing it? Either way, it’s dramatic and we love to see her acting chops.
