Young Post picks the festive tunes to get your Christmas going!
It’s the season of celebration, which naturally means you won’t be able to escape from cheesy tuneage seeping into every shopping centre, lift, restaurant and advert. We don’t mean carols sung in church: we’re on about the loud, tacky, one-hit wonder stuff that artists churn out once a year in the hope of Christmas immortality and riches. Here at Young Post, we love a good Christmas song, so we put together this playlist for you to get into the festive spirit
Mean Girls cast – Jingle Bell Rock
The movie isn’t particularly Christmassy but the scene where Lindsay Lohan’s character and her girl gang perform a naughty Santa dance in front of the whole school at the Christmas talent contest is iconic. Besides, it’s straight up hilarious and soooo fetch.

Destiny’s Child – 8 Days of Christmas
I was going to say Brenda Lee’s, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, but I will go with Destiny’s Child’s 8 Days of Christmas. Apart from just being all-round fabulous, Destiny’s Child really capture the materialistic attitude that makes this time of year so wonderful. A pair of Chloe shades and diamond belly ring is obviously what Christmas is all about.

This is a terribly sad song about a break-up that happened on Christmas. But the lyrics are beautiful, and the song wishes the girl well instead of being spiteful. To me, that’s the Christmas spirit.

This is one of my favourite ever songs, let alone Christmas songs. I don’t enjoy much about Christmas except a) the food and b) the singing. This song makes me less of a Grinch about it all. All together now: “IT’S CHRISTMAAAAAAAS!”

This classic is one of the few Christmas songs that has a country-and-western feel to it. The hick sound reminds me of a down-home Christmas feast where all my cousins would come off the farm for a family dinner in the big city.

Chris de Burgh’s cheesy A Spaceman Came Travelling is a spine-tingling, strangely psychedelic 1970s classic about an angelic spaceman who arrives to witness the birth of Baby Jesus.

The song reminds me how important loved ones are at this time of year. I know some may disapprove of Mariah wearing skimpy clothes when she performs, but her vocal power is incredible and best heard on this – the best-selling Christmas single of all time! I love her very, very much.

Because, duh, I like the Hawaiian way of saying “Merry Christmas”. Robert Alex Anderson wrote the song in 1949, and it’s been covered by lots of different artists, but Bing Crosby’s extra jolly version is one of the most memorable.
