Baby Yoda has set the internet on fire since his debut on live-action Disney+ series The Mandalorian, but he wasn’t the first cute creature to emerge from the Star Wars universe. With the release of The Rise of Skywalker just around the corner, let’s take a look at five adorable characters from the space opera that started it all.

1 Baby Yoda

The “baby” known only as “The Child” is actually 50 years old, and is being pursued by an evil organisation with Imperial ties. He is curious and communicates his desires with his impossibly expressive eyes, and really big ears. He is the same species as Jedi Master Yodi, although this species has not been named in the Star Wars canon. He likes pressing buttons on spaceships.

2 Ewoks

Ewoks helped the Rebels take down the second Death Star.

The furry creatures that live on the moon of Endor are incredibly cute and surprisingly good at fighting.

Although they helped the Rebel Alliance to successfully assault the second Death Star’s shield generator and thus turn the tide of battle, there is one thing many people forget about the short, stalwart creatures. They eat people. Yup. They planned to cook Luke Skywalker and Han Solo as the main course for a banquet in “God” C-3PO’s honour.

3 Porgs

Are porgs too cute to eat? Chewbacca was guilt-tripped into not eating one.

Little is known about these tiny penguin-like creatures with bulgy eyes and small sharp teeth. Native to the planet of Ahch-To, where Luke Skywalker exiled himself after blaming himself for creating Kylo Ren, these pudgy avians cannot fly, but can jump and hover for a short period of time. Chewbacca was about to eat one, but guilt-tripped out of it at the last second. A baby porg is called a porglet. A group of porgs is called a murder of porgs.

4 Max Rebo

Max Rebo was the leader of his own band, which included members Sy Snootles and Droopy McCool.

Max Rebo is a musician and a male Ortolan who was employed by Jabba the Hutt. His skin is neon blue and he has an elephant-like trunk.  He played the red ball jett organ, and was the leader of his own band which included members Sy Snootles and Droopy McCool. He was on Jabba’s sail barge when Luke Skywalker rescued Princess Leia from the sarlacc pit.

5 BB-8

BB-8 rolls around like a football and is really bad at disguises.

BB-8 is pilot and Resistance leader Poe Dameron’s droid. He is good at repairing things and hacking. His head can detach from his body with no noticeable side effects. He is mistaken for a slot machine by a drunken gambler in The Last Jedi. He is bad at disguises but good at piloting AT-ST walkers.
