From Fantastic Beasts to Aquaman: All the year-end films still to come for 2018
Summer may be the biggest season for massive movies, but the approaching year-end is always a time for some pretty major releases. And boy, are there some awesome films coming out in the run-up to 2019.
The latest film in the world of Harry Potter will be coming to theaters later this month. Hichki (opens November 8)
There have been a lot more Indian movies released internationally recently, and Hong Kong has definitely benefited from being able to see the likes of 3 Idiots and Dangal in the cinema. Hichki is another addition to this list of must-see South Asian imports – the story of a teacher with Tourette Syndrome, who overcomes society’s condemnation and a bunch of trouble-making students in her quest to follow her dream.
Burn The Stage (out November 15)
If, like us, you’ve been refreshing the Live Nation website every 20 minutes to try and catch tickets for BTS’ HK gig the second they’re released, this one’s for you. The K-pop super-idols have their own behind-the-scenes feature film, telling the story of their meteoric rise to global fame.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (opens November 15)
Conflicting feelings about Johnny Depp aside, it’s hard not to get excited about the origins of Harry Potter’s world. The first in the spin-off series was a celebration of the best in special effects, and planted some pretty interesting explanations about what comes later in the wizarding world.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (opens November 29)
Seeing the Hong Kong Ballet perform The Nutcracker is a Christmas tradition for many families in the city, and despite the story and music not changing, it can be a very different experience every year, depending on the choreography used, the dancers billed, and so on. For a totally different take, though, you should check out this Disney retelling, staring Twilight’s Renesmee.
Mortal Engines (opens December 13)
The movie adaptation of first in Philip Reeves’ well-loved series about a steampunk, post-apocalyptic world. The world is running out of resources, and cities are now built on tiers that move around on wheels. With Lord of the Rings’ Peter Jackson involved, and filming taking place in his native New Zealand, we’re expecting this to be visually phenomenal.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (opens December 13)
This feature-length animation marks the first appearance of the second Spider-Man, Miles Morales. Quite apart from the #representationmatters strength of this (the character is Afro-Latino), we’re excited about this because the trailers are just. So. Funny.
Aquaman (opens December 20)
Given the success of the standalone Wonder Woman movie last year, DC must be crossing all available limbs that the solo adventures of its characters can reignite interest in the brand. While Justice League disappointed a lot of fans, Jason Momoa, as the sub-aquatic king, was a highlight, so here’s hoping he doesn’t let us down.
Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-it Ralph 2 (opens December 20)
The first film was a brilliant blast of colour, noise and retro game references that appealed to moviegoers of all ages. The follow-up, again focusing on the adventures of an arcade game villain (who’s actually really nice), promises timely hilarity, pop culture references, and all the Disney princesses. Here! For!
