Pope Francis broke with tradition and washed and kissed the feet of women only for the first time during a Holy Thursday ceremony on March 28, 2024. The pontiff visited a women’s prison in Rome to perform the ritual for 12 inmates, to emphasise his vocation of service and humility. Traditionally, popes only washed the feet of Catholic men in the annual ceremony.
