‘Chinese mentality must be respected’: Pope Francis on Vatican’s relationship with China

On board the papal plane to Rome, Pope Francis answered journalists' questions concerning China. He declined to weigh in on the upcoming trial of Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen, saying he did not feel qualified to determine if China was democratic or not. Pope Francis also explained that the Vatican was intent on pursuing diplomatic relations with Beijing, which it has not had for 50 years. Catholic faithful in China are restricted to worshipping in churches within a state party-affiliated Catholic network. Those who practise outside state churches face pressure and harassment.
