United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has welcomed Pope Francis’s remarks endorsing same-sex civil unions. Guterres said on October 21, 2020, that the Pope's comments included in a new film align with the UN “principle of nondiscrimination”. The pontiff’s remarks were included in the feature-length documentary Francesco, which premiered earlier the same day at the Rome Film Festival. Guterres also condemned police brutality following the killing of 12 peaceful protesters in Nigeria also on October 21.
