Female students in Badakhshan, Afghanistan, have been forced to study in secrecy in a small classroom without desks. Taliban officials have closed schools for girls beyond grade six. The students risk their lives, but are determined to get an education. “I demand the Islamic Emirate reopen the shut doors of schools for us girls,” said one of the students, who wished to remain anonymous out of fear of being caught by the Taliban. After taking power last August, the Taliban has increasingly restricted the rights of girls and women.
