Russian troops arrive in Kazakhstan as president issues ‘fire without warning’ order

Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said he has authorised security forces to “fire without warning” on January 7, 2022, to deal with the ongoing violent protests. Tokayev has called the protesters “bandits and terrorists”, vowing to “destroy” those who failed to surrender. The first units of peacekeeping troops from the Collective Security Treaty Organisation arrived in Kazakhstan. It’s the first time in the history of the Moscow-led military alliance that its collective security provision has been exercised.
