Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed in the company’s annual AR/VR conference on October 28, 2021, that his company is rebranding itself as Meta. Zuckerberg said the rebranding is an effort to encompass its virtual-reality vision for the future, including a “metaverse” he predicts will reach a billion people within the next decade. The renaming came as Facebook faces heightened legislative and regulatory scrutiny in many parts of the world following revelations in the so-called Facebook Papers, a trove of leaked files including internal warnings about negative and often harmful consequences of the social network’s algorithms.
