The World Health Organization (WHO) said that a million people died from Covid-19 in 2022. Speaking at a press conference on August 25, 2022, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called it a “tragic milestone” amid all the tools available to prevent deaths. He urged governments to vaccinate more people, with one-third of the planet’s population still unvaccinated. Nearly 6.45 million deaths have been reported to the WHO since the virus was first detected in China in late 2019.
