Since the Covid-19 pandemic began in early 2020, Hong Kong’s beauty parlours, including nail salons and spa centres, have been forced to suspend their business for a total of more than 190 days. Hair salons joined those services to become the latest establishments forced to temporarily close on February 10, 2022, amid a surge involving the Omicron variant of the virus. As the number of cases rises, some hair stylists are voicing concern about the business uncertainties they face, and some nail technicians have accused the government of double standards in its policies meant to control the spread of the disease. Desperate to stay afloat during the suspensions, some hairstylists and manicurists have rolled out door-to-door services to keep serving customers.
