Rudong, a sleepy seaside Chinese town 100km (60 miles) north of Shanghai, has one of the country’s highest proportions of elderly residents. Once, it pioneered Beijing’s now-abandoned one-child policy to prevent overpopulation. Now Rudong faces the challenges of an extreme ageing population, and not enough young people.
