China targets to boost gross domestic product by ‘around 5%’ in 2023

China’s top legislature, the National People’s Congress (NPC), opened its annual meeting on March 5, 2023. Outgoing premier Li Keqiang delivered his final government work report, saying China aims to boost its gross domestic product by “around 5 per cent” in 2023. The world’s second-largest economy grew by only 3 per cent in 2022, 2.5 per cent lower than the previous year’s target amid strict pandemic controls. It saw an average 4.5 per cent GDP growth in the past three years.
