Pope Francis arrived in Mongolia on September 1, 2023, at the start of the first papal visit to the vast Asian nation landlocked between China and Russia. The 86-year-old pontiff's trip to the Buddhist-majority nation is a gesture of support for the tiny Catholic community there, which numbers about 1,400. The trip is also geopolitically strategic, seen as a way of encouraging Mongolia’s fragile democracy and potentially helping the Roman Catholic Church make inroads with the country’s more powerful neighbours.
