Emmanuel Macron made a brief but historic visit to Mongolia on May 21, 2023, the first by a sitting French president to the nation nestled between Russia and China. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, France has been trying to convince countries that have not explicitly condemned the war to take a harder stance – of which Mongolia is one. As Mongolia seeks to reduce its reliance on China and Russia, Macron said France will help by importing the North Asian country’s critical metals.
