Dress Katy Competition entry by Chloe Catolico
We asked our readers to come up with a costume design for Katy to wear in concert and here is one of the entries. It has not been edited
This design is meant to promote one of Katy Perry’s newest song in her tour, Chained to the Rhythm. Released on 21st February 2017, the song is about privileged people who ignore the injustice in this world. My design’s shirt is based on one of her lyrics which states ”so good, your rose-colored glasses on”. The idiom “rose-colored glasses” means seeing something better than it is in reality. We see the world in such a positive light, having education, food, and shelter above our heads. Our rose-coloured glasses blinds us from those who do not have access to these basic needs. Besides this, the skirt I designed represents her lyrics “so comfortable, we're livin' in a bubble, bubble. So comfortable, we cannot see the trouble, trouble”. It illustrates how our privileged lives act as a bubble and shield us from seeing the poverty, war and torment which millions of people go through every day. The skirt is made out of plastic and wraps around her waist like how our comfort bubble entraps us. The skirt’s green tint, along with her earrings, depicts jade, featured prominently in Hong Kong’s jewellery. It is a subtle way to create unity with Hong Kong’s culture. With this design, I hope to raise awareness on the issues which Katy Perry’s Chained to the Rhythm brings.
