Final Fantasy VII is being remade with modern graphics.

Every year, developers outdo themselves and bring ever more realistic and interesting games to the market. Even though fans may still be working through 2019’s best titles (who still hasn’t beaten Sekiro?), 2020 promises to usher in some of the best gaming experiences ever seen.

Here’s a look at the most anticipated games expected to be released this calendar year.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

A complete visual and gameplay overhaul of the classic JRPG that started it all, Final Fantasy VII Remake tells the story of Cloud Strife, a mercenary who teams up with the Avalanche eco-warrior group to take down the evil Shinra Corporation. Early trailers look amazing, but developer Square Enix plans to release the game in episodic instalments, so start saving up your Gil now.

Cyberpunk 2077

An epic role-playing game from the developers of the incredible Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 sees the player take on the role of V, a cyber-enhanced mercenary who is ambushed in a deal gone wrong. Players will explore the sprawling open world of Night City, and must make use of combat, stealth and hacking skills to unravel the mystery behind their betrayal. High hopes indeed.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

The sequel to 2017’s wildly successfully open-world action RPG, Breath of the Wild 2 will see the return of protagonist Link as he battles the reincarnation of an evil undead warrior. Expect another hefty helping of hack-and-slash action, more side activities such as hunting and paragliding, more interaction with Princess Zelda, and a really cool new hairstyle for Link.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The impossibly cute Animal Crossing series is back with a new entry in New Horizons. Build up your home and interact with anthropomorphic animals on a beautiful island, as everyone succumbs to the lure of unbridled consumerism. New features include weather that is based on players’ actual location in real life, and cooperative gameplay for up to eight players.

Overwatch 2

Blizzard Entertainment’s successful competitive team shooter will be getting a follow-up in 2020 and fans are surprised by the new direction. Instead of merely adding new maps and characters as similar games have done, Overwatch 2 will focus on story missions that build on the lore of established heroes. PvE modes (where players will cooperate to take down AI-controlled enemies) will also be heavily featured, so non-competitive gaming fans can finally jump in without feeling intimidated.

Watchdogs Legion

The third instalment in the hacker-themed open-world action game, Legion boasts the new ability to play as any player in the game. Each citizen in the fictionalised version of London can be recruited to join the DedSec group, and will have different strengths and weaknesses according to their role in normal life. For example, a robotics expert will have better performance hacking electronics, while the ex-MI5 spy will have great infiltration skills.

Ghost of Tsushima

An open-world action game set in 13th-century Japan, players will play as samurai Jin Sakai as he attempts to repel the invading Mongol Empire. Atmospheric level design, robust stealth mechanics and a precise combat system make this a must-play this year.
