Afghan farmers struggle to turn profits with cotton after Taliban poppy, opium ban

Former poppy farmers and traders in Helmand, Afghanistan said cotton cultivation is not a viable substitute for poppies, because of lower profits and a severe drought. They urged the ruling Taliban to provide them with an alternative to make a living, threatening to return to farming opium, which is used to make heroin.
