Old Hong Kong

Former centre for Hong Kong’s political detainees becomes Chicago university campus

Hong Kong’s Victoria Road Detention Centre has been converted into a modern academic complex for the University of Chicago. Restoration and construction work for the university’s Hong Kong campus cost US$75 million (HK$586 million).

When leftist riots rocked the former British colony in 1967, the building became the only facility in Hong Kong’s history to hold political prisoners. The new tenants and some of the 52 people once held there are reflecting on the centre’s history.
