There are restaurants that merit a special journey, and then there are temples of gastronomy that are worth crossing seas, negotiating seemingly never-ending roads and summiting mountains to reach.
Not only do these restaurants offer some of the most exquisite food and wine on the planet, they also relieve guests of the need to move on after their meal: with rooms on site, diners can slip straight into the crisp cotton sheets of a capacious bed to digest in horizontal comfort.
Here are five of the most spectacular restaurants with rooms across the world.
Vyn
Simrishamn, Skåne county, Sweden

Few dining rooms offer the modern grace of Daniel Berlin’s two-Michelin-starred Vyn. With expansive windows letting in the view of farmland sweeping down to the Baltic Sea, bare wood floors and tables, and a palette of sand, stone and soil, it is a dream of nature-inspired Scandinavian minimalism only elevated by the supreme elegance of the dishes.
Menus are strictly seasonal, with Berlin growing, foraging and hunting from land and sea. Dishes may include the exquisite langoustine cooked gently in brown butter; white beetroots, raw shrimp, walnuts and Fjällko (Swedish mountain cattle) cream; or cockles with smoked red deer heart and roasted barley.

The former farmhouse also houses 15 serene guest rooms, and a more casual food and wine bar. Vyn, which opened in late 2023, is a seven-hour drive south from Stockholm, or two hours (three hours by train) over the eight-kilometre Øresund Bridge from the Danish capital of Copenhagen. But once you arrive, you may never want to leave.
Venissa
Mazzorbo, Venice, Italy

Venice – crowded, polluted, lost its charm? Not at Michelin-starred (both red and green) Venissa on the serene islet of Mazzorbo, a 50-minute vaporetto (water taxi) ride from the busy streets of San Marco. Upon docking in front of the restaurant – housed in a charming ivory-painted, wooden-shuttered building – a feeling of peace settles on the spirit.
Here, chefs Chiara Pavan and Francesco Brutto serve a tantalising, sustainability-focused tasting menu especially intent on invasive species, from the rapacious blue crab to halophytes (salt-tolerant plants) that are taking over new environments due to the increasing salinity of Venice’s soils. Dishes are full of creativity and colour, often dotted with bright petals and using ingredients grown in the extensive kitchen garden.

After lunch, stroll through the medieval walled vineyard regenerated with Venice’s indigenous dorona grape to the estate’s 14th century bell tower. Stay the night in one of the cosy rooms above the restaurant, or walk across the bridge to the island of Burano, famous for its lace and brightly coloured houses, where Venissa has more rooms available.
Naar
Darwa, Himachal Pradesh, India

The closest airport, in the Corbusier-designed city of Chandigarh, is two hours away on dusty, winding, potholed roads. Then it’s a golf cart up the final rise to the collection of mountain huts that is Naar, chef Prateek Sadhu’s groundbreaking restaurant that opened late last year.
Perched 1,500 metres up in the Himalayan foothills, Naar offers not only stunning views of the highest mountains in the world, but also a captivating taste of them. Ingredients are sourced almost entirely from the Himalayan belt, including foraged hemp, mountain citron and wild strawberries, trout from Himachali rivers, and cheese made by a French-Assamese couple in Shimla.

Dishes range from the delicate almond ricotta with marinated grapes and cape gooseberries, topped with slivered pickled water chestnut and mustard flowers, to a reinterpretation of Uttarakhand soup noodles (a dish that has Tibetan origins) with hand-rolled noodles and deeply umami and delicious blood sausage.
A short stroll from the dining room are the thoughtfully designed suites and villas of Amaya resort, which nestle harmoniously in the wild grass and pines of the hillside.
L’Enclume
Cartmel, Cumbria, UK

Housed in a 13th century blacksmith’s workshop, this three-Michelin-starred (and green-starred) hotspot put the charming village of Cartmel, on the edge of England’s picturesque Lake District, on the gastronomic map.
Set up more than two decades ago by chef Simon Rogan, a pioneer of the British farm-to-table movement, L’Enclume (“Anvil” in French) is the crowning glory of his expanding culinary empire of restaurants in Hong Kong, Thailand, Malta and the UK.

Fresh ingredients come from a 4.8-hectare biodynamic cultivation near the restaurant, where Rogan grows around 165 different fruits, vegetables and herbs. His strictly local ethos bars ingredients such as lemons and vanilla from the kitchen; instead, he grows citrus-flavoured oxalis and perfumy meadowsweet to use as substitutes.
Rogan has cosy rooms in various old stone buildings dotted around Cartmel within easy walking distance of L’Enclume, his more casual Rogan & Co, and his chef’s table, Aulis. Guests can also take home a range of kitchen and household supplies – from L’Enclume forged butter knives and Anvil pale ale, to Home by Simon Rogan linen tea towels and coal oil.
Hiša Franko
Kobarid, Soča Valley, Slovenia

The only three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Slovenia (and it also has a green star), Hiša Franko offers highly creative tasting menus by Ana Roš, the World’s Best Female Chef in 2017, according to 50 Best, and star of the hit Netflix show Chef’s Table.
Roš works closely with local farmers, foragers, shepherds, cheese makers, hunters and fishermen, and grows her own produce and trout behind the restaurant. She transforms these into small wonders such as her corn beignet with fermented cottage cheese, smoked trout roe and wild chives, or her famed potato cooked in a summer hay crust with cultured cream and caviar.

After a night in one of the cosy rooms in the strikingly salmon pink country house dating from 1861, guests get to continue the culinary magic with what is surely one of the world’s most delightful breakfasts. Tables groan with gorgeous seasonal fruits, home-made jams, delicately floral local honey, traditional Tolminc cheeses aged in the Hiša Franko cellar, hazelnut and raisin biscuits, pork and sheep charcuterie, fig leaf or pine needle kombucha, and even bear salami on request.
