As the holidays approach, some of us might use the well-deserved break to travel or enjoy Hong Kong’s lush natural scenery. Use these seven common English phrases to describe your perfect escape from school or work, whether on vacation abroad or in our beautiful city.
1. Off-grid
Meaning: not using or depending on public utilities, especially electricity (“off the grid” is informal slang which means to avoid observation and tracking)
Example: I went off the grid, taking an off-grid camping trip in nature without any internet connection.

2. At the crack of dawn
Meaning: very early in the morning, especially when the sun first appears at daybreak
Example: My flight is so early that I have to wake up at the crack of dawn to catch it.
3. Chart the course
Meaning: originally a naval term referring to mapping out an area (a “chart) to navigate the seas; to plan your direction or route
Example: We hike through the mountains, and Brian charts the course.
4. Get away from it all
Meaning: to go away somewhere different to escape everyday life and problems, typically a holiday
Example: It has been a hectic month, and you deserve to get away from it all.
5. Take a detour
Meaning: to take a different or less direct route to a place, usually to avoid a problem or do something on the way
Example: On our way back to the hotel, we took a detour to visit a few temples.

Meaning: to travel towards or take a route back to your starting location
Example: We should make our way back down the mountain before it gets dark.
7. Hustle and bustle
Meaning: a large amount of activity, usually in a noisy surrounding
Example: To get away from the hustle and bustle of this big city, I will spend my holiday in a small town by the sea.
