Hong Kong is known for having an amazingly efficient public transport system that is considered one of the best in the world. In fact, some forms of public transport have become symbols of the city. The iconic tramways, fondly known as the “ding ding”, are much loved by Hongkongers and visitors alike.
Tramplus was launched as a sister company to the 119-year-old HK Tramways to further the company’s mission to support community, sustainability and innovation in Hong Kong. This year, Tramplus has organised the first Building Our Future – Grand Challenge for secondary students to use their innovation and creativity to make Hong Kong’s iconic trams even better. The competition is the perfect opportunity for students to apply new and existing STEAM skills to rise to the challenge of creating a more innovative, sustainable, and liveable future for Hong Kong.
Founded in 2021, Tramplus partners with leading global institutions and educators to provide access to world-class STEAM education. The broad-based curricula cover topics such as science, mechanical and electrical engineering, coding and urban development from a daily life perspective, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to build a smarter and more sustainable city.
Co-organised by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and partnered with MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node, the Grand Challenge is supported by AiTLE, Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund, Google Smarter Digital City, HK Cyberport, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, HK Tramways, M+, Microsoft, Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, ReThink HK, The HKFYG Leadership Institute and Young Post.
Students will gain technical expertise and develop interdisciplinary teamwork skills while honing their creative thinking skills to create projects with the potential to make Hong Kong a more liveable and sustainable city.
Teams shortlisted to compete in the finals will have a chance to participate in the finale and present their work at Hong Kong’s world-class global museum of visual culture, M+. Champions from both the Chinese and English Divisions will be awarded a cash prize of HK$10,000 and a one-month tram ad for the winning school.
To stand out in the competition, students are encouraged to gain hands-on experience through the use of artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and other new technologies that are increasingly becoming essential tools in many fields, including innovation & technology. Participants will learn how to effectively use different technologies to solve real-life problems, like those found within a transport system, which could prove invaluable in their careers.

Working together as part of a team, with the support of mentors, helps foster collaboration while providing insight into new ways of thinking about society’s challenges. Through participation in the competition, young minds become exposed to the vast possibilities presented through emerging technologies – inspiring them to come up with some truly ingenious ideas that could potentially improve the quality of life for people in Hong Kong and around the world.
